Map, Driving Directions and Parking for the Indpendence Living History Center

The Independence Living History Center is located on 3rd Street between Chestnut and Walnut Streets in Center City (Old City), Philadelphia. It is a large, red brick, building with a bell tower near the front door. It is located across the street from the historic First Bank of the United States. (The building used to be the Visitor Center for Independence Park.)

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Bus Routes: 21, 42, 57, 5 (stop is near or on the corner of 3rd and Chestnut Streets). Also the 38, 44, 17, 121 (stop at Independence Park Mall, on the corners of either 5th or 6th and Market Streets)

Subway: Market-Frankford Line to 2nd Street (walk one block south, then one block west) or 5th Street stations (walk one block south, then 3 blocks east)

Philly Phlash: (Purple Bus, $1 a trip), Stop #2 (3rd and Market Streets, walk one block south) [Route map]

From the South: Take I-95 North. Follow signs for Central Phila./I-676 (Exit 22). Follow signs for Phila./Independence Hall/Callowhill Street. Keep right at the ramp fork. Stay straight on Callowhill Street. Turn left onto North 6th Street. Turn Left onto Chestnut Street. Go three blocks to 3rd and Chestnut Streets. The Living History Center is on the southeast corner.

From the North: There are three options: NJ Turnpike via Betsy Ross Bridge or Benjamin Franklin Bridge, and I-95

  • NJ Turnpike via Betsy Ross Bridge: NJ Turnpike to Exit 4. Route 73 North to Route 90 (Betsy Ross Bridge). Take the Betsy Ross Bridge into Philadelphia. Follow signs onto I-95 South (Center City). Follow the signs for Central Phila./I-676 (Exit 22). Follow signs for Phila./Independence Hall/Callowhill Street. Make right at the light. Stay straight on Callowhill St. Turn left onto North 6th Street. Turn Left onto Chestnut Street. Go three blocks to 3rd and Chestnut Streets. The Living History Center is on the southeast corner.
  • NJ Turnpike via Benjamin Franklin Bridge: NJ Turnpike to Exit 4. Route 73 North to Route 38 West to US-30. US-30 West over the Benjamin Franklin Bridge to I-676. Follow signs for 5th and 6th Streets. Stay in right lane. Go past 5th Street exit. Follow signs for Independence Hall/6th Street. Make a right at the first light onto Franklin Street. Go around bend. Merge onto 6th Street South. Stay to your left toward 6th Street/Independence Hall. Turn Left onto Chestnut Street. Go three blocks to 3rd and Chestnut Streets. The Living History Center is on the southeast corner.
  • Via I-95: Take I-95 South. Follow the signs for Central Phila./I-676 (Exit 22). Stay to your right. Follow signs for Phila./Independence Hall/Callowhill Street. Make right at the light. Stay straight on Callowhill St. Turn left onto North 6th Street. Turn Left onto Chestnut Street. Go three blocks to 3rd and Chestnut Streets. The Living History Center is on the southeast corner.

From the West: Take I-76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike) to Valley Forge (Exit 326). Follow signs to Philadelphia via I-76 East. Remain on I-76 East for about 25 miles until you see signs for Central Philadelphia. Take I-676 East (Exit 344). Continue on I-676 East to the 8th Street exit. Make a right onto 8th Street. Make a left onto Race Street. Make a right onto 6th Street. Turn Left onto Chestnut Street. Go three blocks to 3rd and Chestnut Streets. The Living History Center is on the southeast corner.

From the East: Take Atlantic City Expressway to Route 42 North. Follow Route 42 North to the Benjamin Franklin Bridge (I-676), crossing into Philadelphia. Follow signs for 5th and 6th Streets. Stay in the right lane. Go past 5th Street exit. Follow signs for Independence Hall/6th Street. Make a right at the first light onto Franklin Street. Go around bend. Merge onto 6th Street South. Stay to your left toward 6th Street/ Independence Hall. Turn Left onto Chestnut Street. Go three blocks to 3rd and Chestnut Streets. The Living History Center is on the southeast corner.

PARKING

Street Parking (2- and 3-hour parking meters) are available on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Streets — north of Chestnut, and South of Walnut.

Parking is also available on Front Street and along Dock Street (25 cents for 15 minutes).
